The Outside of a Horse is a novel about a girl who loves horses. Her father was in the army, but got sent home because he had his leg amputated. He now has to get used to his new prosthetic leg, and the fact that he is no longer in the war, which puts strain on the family. The girl eventually gets a job at the stable down the road. She then befriends a rescue horse that comes to the stable and the two of them deal with their own fears and hardships together. The author did very well at making the reader feel everything that the characters felt. It makes you look back on yourself and wonder 'could I have lived with that?' or 'what would I have done in that situation?' The story is sad but inspirational. It sends a message that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it, and to never give up even though the odds are stacked against you. It was well written and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this to anyone who likes the more realistic fiction books. If you are a horse fanatic, you will probably love this book.
